In-situ Chemical Oxidation
Service Station, Cape Cod, MA

Objective: Remediate historic and new gasoline releases at a retail dispensing facility and an adjacent residential property.

Result: Concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons in groundwater and indoor air were sharply reduced, resulting in the elimination of an IRA condition.

An air sparge/soil vapor extraction system (AS/SVE) system was insta lled for remediation of gasoline-impacted soil and groundwater from a historic release. While contaminant concentrations were reduced, the plume had migrated to an adjacent residentil property beyond the zone of influence of the AS/SVE system. In addition, a new release was discovered, resulting in an Immediate Response Action condition due to impacts to indoor air. Norfolk designed and installed an ISCO system to treat impact ed groundwater both inside and outside the zone of influence of the AS/SVE system with no disruption to retail operations. After several applications, levels of gasoline-related organic compounds within the treatment area were reduced by over 90%, and airborne concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons within the residence were reduced. Remedial additive monitoring conducted during implementation of the program confirmed that there were no measurable impacts to an adjacent surface water body.
