Wastewater Treatment Plants

Norfolk personnel have extensive experience completing treatment plant performance evaluations, feasibility studies and treatability analyses, environmental assessments (hydrogeological modeling and nutrient loading assessments) and the design, permitting, construction oversight and operational supervision for wastewater treatment and disposal facilities permitted through the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection under the Groundwater Discharge Permit Program.  Norfolk designs advanced wastewater treatment facilities to serve residential developments (subdivisions, condominiums and apartments), institutional facilities (schools, religious community, hospitals and nursing homes), resorts (golf course developments, hotels and conference facilities) commercial establishments (shopping malls, strip plazas and office parks) and “decentralized” or remote areas of a community and have ranged in size from 10,000 gallons per day to more than 300,000 gallons per day.

Norfolk designs facilities to achieve advanced levels of treatment and disinfection and have been often sited within environmentally sensitive areas or have promoted indirect aquifer recharge in water stressed environments.  Norfolk carefully evaluates each individual site, completing hydrogeological assessments and wastewater strength/constituent characterizations before selecting the appropriate treatment technologies to properly treat the waste stream.

Some of the treatment technologies and processes that Norfolk personnel have incorporated into facility designs have included:

- Rotating Biological Contactors (RBCs)
- Sequencing Batch Reactors (SBRs)
- Amphidrome Treatment Systems
- Fixed-Film / Activated Sludge Treatment
- Trickling Filters
- Activated Sludge Treatment Processes
- Up-flow Aerobic Pressure Reactors
- Membrane Filtration
- Chlorine Disinfection with Dechlorination
- Sludge Conditioning, Thickening and Dewatering
  - Primary and Secondary Clarification
- Tertiary Filtration
- Nitrification / Denitrification
- Phosphorus Removal
- Chemical Treatment Systems
- Ultraviolet Light Disinfection
- Odor Control
- Septage Receiving
- Grit and Screening Removal
- Industrial Pretreatment
